Check the register first
Search the CRICOS register for the provider and the course. A handsome campus photograph is not a registration.
Under 18
Students under 18 need an approved welfare arrangement — a parent, a nominated relative, or the school’s own pathway. Ask the international office. This paragraph is not immigration advice.
House versus homestay
Boarding is a bed on or beside campus. Homestay is a host household. The Saturday cultures are different. So are the contracts.
Fees
Ask for the overseas schedule, not the domestic one. See international fees for the extra lines, then international students for the official links.
English and first term
Some schools run ELICOS or EAL programmes; some expect a minimum score. Confirm before you apply. Airport transfers, who holds documents, and what happens if a connection fails belong in the first email to the international office.
Weekly board and relatives
A relative in the same city does not automatically make weekly board legal or pastoral. Welfare rules and the handbook both have to agree. Do not invent a guardian.

A first-week story that is not a promise
The student lands, someone approved meets them, the house or homestay has the welfare letter, and the international office knows the flight number. That sequence is ordinary when it is planned. It fails when a directory card was treated as a CoE. Plan it with the school. Verify CRICOS yourself.
English support, if needed, should be confirmed before you travel. A minimum score you discover at the airport is a bad surprise.

Why a directory card is not a CoE
A profile on this site records a public campus. It does not record a Confirmation of Enrolment, a welfare letter, or a bed for your year. Families who treat the card as step one of a visa get the order wrong. The register is step one. The school’s international office is step two. This essay is orientation beside those doors.
Ask whether the product is a house, a homestay, or a year of English then a house. Ask who meets the aircraft. Ask who holds documents. Ask what happens if a parent cannot travel. Ask for the overseas schedule and the visa-refusal refund clause in the same email.
A relative in the same city does not automatically satisfy welfare rules or the handbook. Do not invent a guardian because the flights look convenient.

Guardianship language on a brochure is not a welfare letter. Ask the international office which pathway they actually issue for under-18 students. This essay will not invent one.
