Weekly (weekday) boarding and full boarding are different products that happen to share a crest. Families get into trouble when they treat the cheaper residential line as “the same house, less money”. The nights included change who is in the building on Saturday, who is on duty, and who pays for the airport run you just moved onto the family.

What the words usually mean
Weekly or weekday board usually covers Monday to Friday. Students go home on weekends. Full board includes seven nights in term, plus arranged exeats. Some schools use “weekly” for a slightly different span — Thursday night to Sunday, or a sport-weekend return. Ask which nights are billed. Do not assume a national definition.
A house that empties on Friday afternoon is a different Saturday from a regional campus that stays full. Prospectuses photograph the same chapel either way.
Who weekday board suits
Families within a Friday drive sometimes want the student home for club sport, parish life or younger siblings. That can be an excellent match. It can also mean a thin boarding community and a Sunday-night reset every week. Ask how many boarders remain on Saturday. Ask whether weekend sport still requires a return.
Price the travel you just accepted. Fuel, flights and a parent’s Friday afternoon are part of the weekly-board invoice even when they do not appear on the school PDF.
Who full board suits
Remote, interstate and many overseas families need seven nights and a house that does not empty. Full board is not automatically “more caring”. It is more nights. Ask who is on duty after lights-out. Ask how leave weekends work. Ask what happens if a flight fails at the start of term.

How to compare two quotes
Same year level. Same mode. Same extras policy. Written and dated. If one school only offers full board and the other only offers weekly, you are not comparing price — you are comparing childhood weeks. Choose the week first.

A worked shortlist, without numbers
Imagine two NSW houses. One offers weekday board for families on a Friday drive. One offers only full board because most students fly. If you live on a station, the first quote is not a bargain — it is a missing Saturday and a flight you will still buy. If you live two suburbs away, the second quote is a week your child may not need. Write both admissions offices the same question: which nights are included for the year we need? Then stop comparing price until the nights match.
Overseas and weekly board
Overseas families sometimes ask for weekly board because a relative lives in the same city. That can work if the welfare arrangement and the handbook agree. It can fail if the relative is not an approved host. Do not invent a guardian. See international students.

“Which nights are included for Year 9 in the year we would enter?” That sentence prevents most mode confusion. Everything else — price, culture, sport — follows the answer.

Regional and remote families usually need seven nights. Metropolitan families sometimes want weekday board so club sport and extended family stay intact. Neither preference is morally superior. Match the product to the travel you will actually do.
