Sydney and NSW boarding schools

New South Wales has the widest boarding map in this directory: inner-harbour and North Shore houses, western-Sydney campuses at Parramatta, and regional schools in Armidale, Orange, Tamworth and Jindabyne. A Sydney house is not a regional house. Leave weekends, train lines and density change the culture even when the chapel architecture looks similar.

How do you start a NSW shortlist without a ranking? Decide the travel you will actually do each term. A Wahroonga or Bellevue Hill house assumes a different Friday than an Armidale campus that fills from the tablelands and from interstate. Jindabyne adds snow-season logistics. Parramatta sits between those poles. If the airport run only works twice a term, that is a fact, not a footnote.

North Shore and eastern-suburbs houses are the most searched. They are not the whole state. Families who only google “Sydney boarding” miss long-standing regional programmes that exist because rural and remote households need a full-week house. Regional NSW boarding usually means longer travel, more full-week boarders, and a town that exists beyond the school gate.

Gender mix is not a costume. Girls’, boys’ and co-ed houses all appear in this hub. Several historic boys’ schools now teach co-educational juniors while keeping a boys’ senior house. Co-ed usually means shared classrooms and separate sleeping accommodation. Read the gender line on the profile, then ask the school — third-party lists lag.

Affiliation in NSW is a long grammar-and-college story: Anglican, Presbyterian, Uniting, Catholic and independent. Affiliation predicts chapel and some pastoral language. It does not predict who is on duty at 9pm, how phones are handled, or whether Saturday night is full. Ask for the boarding handbook, not just the academic prospectus.

Fees are not a Sydney band on this site. Archived pages loved publishing a North Shore range as if it were a current quote. We will not. Tuition is the academic line day students also pay. Boarding is extra. Weekday board is not full board. Overseas packages add CRICOS, health cover and guardianship. Request this year’s PDF from each school on a three-campus shortlist and compare like with like.

Scholarships exist — academic, music, sport, means-tested, and some rural or Indigenous awards. An award may cover tuition only. Closing dates often sit in the year before entry. International families should verify CRICOS registration on the official register before they treat a NSW profile as an enrolment pathway. A listing here is not a Confirmation of Enrolment. Under-18 students need an approved welfare arrangement. Homestay is a different product from a school house.

Names repeat. PLC, St Catherine’s, St Hilda’s, Scots and Grammar exist in more than one state. They are different legal entities. Open the suburb. After you open three profiles, write to admissions. Ask which years still have beds, which nights are included, who stays in on Saturday, and where to download this year’s tuition and boarding schedule. Visit on a weekend if you can. A practical NSW research week does not start with a “top ten Sydney boarding schools” tab. It starts with a calendar. Mark term dates, likely exeats, and the Fridays you can actually collect a child. If those Fridays only work from a western-Sydney depot, Wahroonga is a different product than the search bar suggested. If they only work from a New England property, Armidale is not a consolation prize — it may be the honest campus.

Weekly versus full board is the second NSW fork. Families on the North Shore sometimes want weekday board so the student is home for club sport and extended family. Remote and interstate families need seven nights and a house that does not empty. Ask which nights are billed before you compare two quotes. The pastoral culture follows the nights. A thin Saturday house can still photograph well on a Wednesday.

Documents to request from every NSW admissions office on your shortlist: the current boarding handbook, the tuition-by-year table, the boarding-by-year table (weekday and full if both exist), compulsory levies, and this year’s scholarship instrument if an award is in play. If the student is overseas, add the international schedule, the CRICOS course code, and the under-18 welfare pathway. Refuse a single “all-in” sentence that will not split.
