Scholarships at Australian boarding schools are written instruments. They are not vibes, and they are not a promise that boarding is free.
Tuition is the usual target
Many academic and music awards reduce tuition. Boarding can remain payable in full. Ask the sentence out loud: “Does this award apply to the residential fee?”
Means-tested is not automatic
Bursaries require evidence. They have their own closing dates. A merit award and a bursary can sometimes sit together — only the school can say.
External schemes
Rural, agricultural and Indigenous programmes exist beside school awards. They have their own eligibility rules. This site does not administer them.
First-email questions
Which awards are open for our entry year? Is there an exam or audition? Is boarding included? What is the annual review?
Read the scholarships hub, then write to admissions. Do not send the application to this directory.
Timing
Academic and music processes often sit in the year before entry. Sport may follow another calendar. Means-tested forms ask for documents you do not want to assemble in January of the start year. A closed date is a closed date.
Review clauses
Many awards run several years with an annual review. Some are tied to remaining in the house or to a team. Leaving boarding can end a remission that looked like a six-year fact. Read the clause before you celebrate.
External trusts
Rural and Indigenous programmes exist beside school awards. Eligibility is specific. This site does not administer them and does not forecast outcomes. Start with the school and with publicly listed schemes.

One worked conversation
“We are applying for Year 9 in two years. Which awards are open? Is there an exam? Does any award touch boarding? What is the review clause if we leave the house?” That is a complete first email. It does not ask this directory for a dollar value. It does not ask for a guarantee.
If the school cannot answer those four, wait for the instrument. Do not budget a rumour.

How to keep an award from becoming a January surprise
Put the instrument next to the fee PDF. Highlight whether boarding is included. Highlight the review clause. Highlight what happens if the student leaves the house, changes instrument, or receives a disciplinary finding. Those clauses are ordinary. They are also how households discover in January that “full scholarship” meant tuition only.
Do not build a shortlist from “who pays the most”. Build it from travel, house gender and Saturday night, then ask the remaining campuses about this year’s instruments. An award that requires a house your child will hate is not a win.
Music and sport awards add rehearsal and travel. Academic awards add exam pressure in a new city. Means-tested awards add paperwork. External rural or Indigenous programmes add a second set of rules. Keep the paper trails separate. This directory administers none of them.
